Other Fun Attractions

Calliope is a small town in Queensland. As a result of its small size, there aren’t as many activities to engage in like in the bigger cities. However, this does not mean that you can’t have a great time in Calliope. There are still several awesome places to visit and exciting activities to take part in, in and around Calliope.

Due to the areas’ development in recent years, many more opportunities and attractions have begun cropping up. Calliope’s closeness to Gold Coast, Brisbane, etc., means that you can enjoy some of their attractions as well without travelling far. The attractions in Calliope include:

Mount Archer National Park

Mount Archer National Park is a park that preserves the remaining bushland in Berserker Ranges. It is a beautiful backdrop to Rockhampton. The national park covers an area of 4250 hectares. Mount Archer is the highest point at 604 metres above sea level. You can get a spectacular view of the city and the surrounding area from the top of open forest and woodland communities.

Visitors to the park are encouraged to obey certain rules. The rules include:

  • Not littering the park
  • Leaving pets at home
  • Leaving all vehicles and bikes outside the park to preserve the trails
  • Not feeding or disturbing the animals and wildlife in the area
  • Not destroying plants

Tropic of Capricorn Spire

The Tropic of Capricorn represents the southern-most position of the sun as it makes its annual journey. It is the point where the sun will be directly overhead. Tropic of Capricorn is very close to Roehampton. The spire is a marker.

It also acts as a sundial. From the spire, you can observe the movement of the earth around the sun. It is one of the few locations in the world where you can observe the extent of difference in the length of shadows during mid-winter and summer.

Gecko Valley

Are you a tourist? Do you love wine tasting? Then Gecko Valley is a place you have to visit. It is a stellar wine attraction in the region of Gladstone. The Gecko Valley is family-owned. The Gecko valley consists of a cellar door, a vineyard, designer jewellery, a Rose Garden Cafe, a locally renowned painting artist, and lots of merchandise.

Tondoon Botanic Gardens

Tondoon Botanic Gardens is located in Gladstone. The botanical gardens opened in 1988. It is one of the top ten regional gardens in Australia, according to Australian Geographic in 2018. It comprises tropical plants, subtropical plants, and dry rainforest plants from the South East Queensland, Port Curtis, and the North Queensland regions. The garden has a tranquil feel as you walk along the London Lake. It has a more dynamic layout, unlike the more typical manicured lawns and straight edges.
