About the Area

Our Area

Calliope is a town located to the South West of Gladstone, about a short fifteen-minute drive away. The town was a product of the discovery of gold and a gold rush that started in 1860. The town was proclaimed as Calliope Goldfield for the first time in 1863.

The town was named after the Calliope River. Governor Charles Augustus Fitzroy named the Calliope River in the year 1854. The Calliope River was named so by the governor after he sailed on the HMS Calliope to Port Curtis from Sydney.

Calliope is the first officially proclaimed Goldfield in Queensland. It was declared in 1863. While the gold was being mined, the town experienced a lot of activity. However, by the middle of 1970, the gold in Calliope was exhausted. The town began to decline, and there were only about twenty miners left in the entire town.

However, in recent times, Calliope has recovered from the decline. Gladstone has quickly become one of the most important industrial ports. It is a good alternative for commuting. The town has experienced a boom once again as a result of this. The Queensland coast is centrally located. It is merely one hour from Brisbane by air and two hours from Sydney. It is the foundation of the resource boom of the State. In fact, it is the very heart of the prosperity of the area.

All the major services are offered and available in Calliope. The services include childcare, primary school, shops, hotels, golf course, golf club, parkland, post office, council chambers, bowls, service stations, equestrian, and sporting grounds.

Calliope is agriculturally oriented. Beef production, cattle rearing, piggery, dairying, growing crops, vegetables, fruits, etc., are the agricultural activities carried out in Calliope. These primary-industry activities have always been the major occupation of the people of Calliope.

Calliope town has undergone some significant growth in recent times. Calliope’s growth has happened concurrently with the expansions taking place in the region of Gladstone and a large-scale development taking place in the local industry. This trend has continued and will continue in the foreseeable future.

Due to the boom in economic activities in Gladstone, the area has begun to experience an increase in its population. In a census carried out in 2016, the population of the area was 61640. This above-average increase was forecasted by the Australian Bureau of Statistics report, which states that the population will continue to increase consistently.

By the year 2031, the Gladstone area could have increased to between 90,000 people and 140,000 people. Due to this increase in the population rate, the demand for housing will necessarily increase. The forecasts estimate that there will be demand for an additional four hundred new homes every year.

The property market in Gladstone and Calliope has continued to rise. The rate of rental vacancies is dipping as the market absorbs the stock. At the same time, the median rents are rising. At the rate the property market is going for, it is essential to move quickly and take advantage of the recent lull in houses’ prices.
