Calliope, established in 1871, is a locality and rural town in the Gladstone region of Queensland. Calliope is located just about fifteen minutes away, by road, from Gladstone. The town is located on the South West side of Gladstone.
Calliope is a deep-water harbour. It has a great link to the coal reserves in Bowen Basin. Transportation between the two points is easy. This ease of access has made Calliope a strategic place. It can be argued to be the engine room of the State. In terms of tourism, its fine breaches and nearness to the Great Barrier Reef are a major draw to tourists.
Calliope is located near the crossroads of the Bruce and Dawson Highways. The Dawson Highway and the Bruce Highway are located at the centre of Queensland. Speeding along the Bruce Highway, you can easily miss or fail to notice the Calliope town. This is because the road that diverts to Calliope is quite easy to bypass or miss. That particular road leads on the west to Calliope and leads on the east to Gladstone.
Calliope is 20 km, 12 miles to the South-South West of Gladstone and 22 kilometres to the South West of Gladstone. The Monto-Road of Gladstone, also known as State Route-69, goes from the south of the Dawson Highway and runs through Calliope town. Calliope is 528 kilometres to the North of Brisbane via the Bruce Highway and the Dawson Highway.
The coordinates of Calliope Town are 24.0061° South and 151.1988° East. Calliope covers an area mass of 182.9 kilometres square, that is 70.6 square miles. It is in the Gladstone region Local Government Area.
Calliope can be accessed from Brisbane, Gold Coast, etc., by air travel, train, bus system by driving down. The central location of the town ensures that Calliope is easily accessible.
